Tiny Mini SSDs for Gaming and Beyond

A new storage device form factor called the Mini SSD has been introduced by Chinese manufacturer Biwin. Measuring 15mm x 17mm, these tiny drives offer capacities and performance similar to NVMe SSDs, but with a more compact design. The first devices to use this technology are the GPD Win 5 handheld gaming console and OneXPlayer Super X tablet.

Currently, users with small devices face limited options for additional storage space, such as microSD cards or larger M.2 SSDs. However, Biwin’s Mini SSD aims to combine the benefits of both in a single, durable design. Available in capacities up to 2TB, these drives feature sustained read and write speeds of 3,700 MBps and 3,400 MBps, respectively.

The Mini SSD uses PCIe 4 x2 interface and NVMe 1.4 protocol, built around 3D TLC NAND. Its unique design allows for easy drive swapping using a pin, making it ideal for use in rugged portable devices or industrial settings where durability is crucial. The drives are also dust-proof, waterproof, and resistant to drops, making them suitable for extreme environments.

Biwin has not announced retail pricing or availability yet, but the GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X tablet will be among the first devices to use these innovative Mini SSDs.
