A cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in Central Harlem has grown to 99 cases, including four deaths, according to health officials in New York City. The bacteria, Legionella, is suspected to have originated from cooling towers in the area.
The New York City Department of Health confirmed positive tests of the bacteria in 12 cooling towers serving 10 buildings, but all but one have been repaired or remediated. Health officials stress that plumbing systems are separate from cooling tower systems and assure residents that the outbreak is not related to their water supply.
Inspectors are working with building owners to ensure compliance with testing and remediation procedures. Although new cases have declined, health officials urge residents in affected ZIP codes to seek medical attention immediately if they experience flu-like symptoms such as coughing, fever, or headaches.
Legionnaires’ disease is treatable with antibiotics but can be deadly if left untreated, with a 10% mortality rate among those who contract it. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
