Researchers at the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology have achieved a breakthrough in understanding human reproduction by capturing real-time, three-dimensional images and videos of an embryo implanting into collagen tissue designed to mimic the uterus. This technology could lead to improvements for in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques.
According to Samuel Ojosnegros, a bioengineer at the institute, this discovery could help develop treatments specifically targeting implantation, which is currently a major obstacle in human reproduction. “Implantation failure is one of the main causes of infertility,” he notes, adding that up to 60% of miscarriages occur during this process.
The footage shows how embryos interact with the uterine tissue, providing valuable insights into the implantation process. By studying this process, fertility doctors may be able to identify and address issues leading to implantation failure, ultimately improving IVF outcomes.
