Grammy-winning actor Jamie Foxx has shared his harrowing experience of suffering a brain bleed in April 2023, which put him into a coma for several weeks. The incident led to a stroke and left Foxx with partial paralysis.
Foxx initially dismissed the issue as a minor headache but soon found himself in serious trouble. He underwent surgery after being declared “fighting for life” by his doctor at Piedmont Hospital.
In an Instagram video, Foxx shared that he had gone through a “hell and back” experience. The actor’s doctor described the situation as dire, with the doctor saying, “If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him.”
According to neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Saphier, brain bleeds, also known as hemorrhagic stroke, affect approximately 70,000 to 80,000 U.S. patients per year. The condition can cause a range of symptoms, including severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and difficulty speaking.
Saphier emphasized the importance of quick treatment for brain bleeds, stating that nearly 45% of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage do not survive. He also highlighted the need for lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of brain bleeding, such as managing blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly.
Foxx’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of brain bleeds and the importance of prioritizing one’s health. As Saphier advised, “any type of lifestyle activities that are considered heart-healthy are also healthy for the brain and its blood vessels.”
