The No. 1 UNC women’s soccer team fell to Tennessee with a score of 2-0, marking the first time a reigning national champion lost in their opening game since 2002. In a back-and-forth match, both teams struggled with offense and defense, with the Tar Heels unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities.
The Volunteers found their footing in the second half, led by forward Shae O’Rourke who scored two goals within 20 minutes. Despite dominating possession initially, North Carolina couldn’t hold onto the ball, allowing Tennessee’s aggressive defense to limit their chances.
Senior forward Kate Faasse had a chance to break through early on but missed her shot wide right. Junior Olivia Thomas also came close in the 31st minute but was blocked by Norris. Meanwhile, Tennessee defender Sara Kate Rath caused trouble for North Carolina with her quick runs upfield and shots just over the goalpost.
The loss drops UNC to 0-1, while Tennessee improves to 1-0, marking a strong start for the Volunteers in their season.
