A deadly conflict in Gaza has left at least 25 Palestinians dead as Israeli gunfire clashed with civilians seeking aid. The violence comes amid a US-backed plan to relocate the territory’s population, with critics warning of ethnic cleansing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was not pushing Palestinians out but allowing them to leave from combat zones and the strip. However, witnesses reported people were shot on their way to aid distribution sites or while awaiting convoys entering Gaza.
Efforts to revive ceasefire talks have resumed after apparently breaking down last month. Egyptian officials met with Hamas in Cairo, but Israel has no plans to send its negotiating team to talks.
Hamas demands the release of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel and a lasting ceasefire before releasing remaining hostages. Meanwhile, South Sudan denies reports it is engaging in discussions about relocating Palestinians.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said there were no incidents at or near its sites Wednesday, but Israeli fire killed at least six people waiting for aid trucks close to the Morag corridor.
The conflict has already displaced most of Gaza’s population, destroyed vast areas, and pushed the territory toward famine. Over 61,700 Palestinians have been killed in the war, with over half being women and children.
