Cholera cases are soaring in war-torn Sudan, with nearly 100,000 reported and over 2,400 deaths attributed to the disease. The World Health Organization warns that if left unchecked, the outbreak could spread across borders for weeks or months to come.
The situation is particularly dire in the western Darfur region, where Médecins Sans Frontières has documented 40 deaths in a single week. Tawila, a town in North Darfur, has become a hotspot for disease, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing nearby violence.
According to Sheldon Yett, UNICEF’s representative to Sudan, people are crossing borders, and the epidemic is already spreading into neighboring countries, including South Sudan and Chad. If urgent action is not taken, regional stability could be severely impacted.
The outbreak is exacerbated by the country’s ongoing conflict, which has led to a significant influx of displaced persons in the region. The Sudanese Army’s last holdout in Darfur has been under siege for over a year, adding to the humanitarian crisis.
