National Grid Bill to Rise by 10% Next Month, Upstate NY to See $600 Annual Increase

National Grid’s bill is expected to increase by about 10% next month for customers in Upstate New York. The company will spend around $4.3 billion on capital improvements and hire at least 480 new employees to maintain its aging electric and gas networks.

The state Public Service Commission approved the rate hike, which will lead to a 31% increase in delivery charges for electricity and a 40% increase in natural gas over three years. This means an average household’s annual energy bill will rise by $264 during the first year, reaching $2,860, and increasing to $3,160 by the end of the period.

National Grid plans to use some of the increased revenue from the rate hike to improve its low-income discount program, with a $210 million increase over three years. The company’s average residential rate will rise from 20 cents per kilowatt-hour to 24 cents under the new plan.

The increases come as national averages are higher in New England and the regional average is around 27 cents per kilowatt-hour. National Grid officials say the investment is necessary to maintain safe and reliable service, while consumer advocates warn that the hikes will be devastating for households already struggling financially.
