Heavy flooding and landslides have claimed nearly 200 lives in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with the majority of deaths occurring in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. At least 30 homes were destroyed, and a rescue helicopter crashed, killing its five crew members.
The region is expected to experience heavy rainfall until August 21, with several areas declared disaster zones. One survivor described the floods as “doomsday,” saying it felt like death was staring him in the face due to the force of the water.
Climate experts blame climate change for more extreme and frequent weather events. The monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September, has already delivered about three-quarters of South Asia’s annual rainfall this year, resulting in over 300 deaths nationwide.
