Catch the Perseid Meteor Shower Before It’s Too Late

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the best of the year, is still visible despite missing its peak due to a bright moon and unpredictable Ohio weather. Here’s how and when to catch the show.

The Perseid meteor shower will be visible through August 23, with the best viewing times after midnight and just before dawn. However, it will take some effort to spot the meteors due to a significant reduction in activity caused by the moon. The American Meteor Society predicts that only 10-20 meteors per hour will be visible, compared to the typical 50-100 during peak hours.

For those willing to venture out, rural areas can offer breathtaking views of the Perseids. Look towards the northeast and the constellation Perseus for the best viewing experience. In Ohio, clear skies are expected on August 15, with partly cloudy skies and a chance of storms in the following days.

To maximize your chances of spotting meteors, head to one of the International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) designated dark sky parks in Ohio. These parks include Geauga Observatory Park, Fry Family Park, Burr Oak State Park, Stonelick State Park, and Wayne National Forest. The isolated Lamping Homestead Recreation Area within Wayne National Forest is reportedly the darkest site in Ohio.

Tips from EarthSky for catching the best views of a meteor shower include finding a location away from city lights, being patient (it may take 15-20 minutes to adjust your eyes), dressing comfortably, and relaxing while taking in the evening’s sky.
