The Financial Times has launched digital access plans that cost significantly more than its stated monthly fee of €69, sparking controversy among tech bosses and journalists alike. While the newspaper offers essential digital access to quality FT journalism for a yearly upfront payment, which includes saving 20%, it falls short on providing complete digital coverage.
The FT’s current digital access plan only grants access to quality journalism without including access to its website (ft.com) or mobile app. This limits users’ ability to read the newspaper’s content across multiple devices. In contrast, other online news sources offer more comprehensive access to their publications at an affordable price point.
It appears that some tech companies are willing to pay millions of euros for premium digital access to quality journalism. However, this raises questions about why the FT is unable or unwilling to provide a similar experience at its stated monthly fee.
