A rare case of Vibrio vulnificus infection has been reported at a beach in Falmouth, Massachusetts, prompting public health officials to issue an alert. The individual, who was swimming with an exposed wound, developed severe illness.
Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring marine bacterium that can cause severe infections through open wounds or consumption of contaminated seafood. People with liver disease, diabetes, weakened immune systems, and older adults are at higher risk.
To prevent infection, public health officials recommend covering wounds with waterproof bandages, washing hands after handling raw seafood, and wearing protective clothing. Symptoms include fever, chills, and blistering skin lesions.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed 71 cases of Vibrio species this year, with most linked to wound infections from swimming. Officials stress that there is no advisory or closure in effect for the beach, but residents and visitors are urged to take precautions to protect their health and safety.
