A child in Adams County has been hospitalized with measles, marking the state’s 17th confirmed case of the virus this year. The child did not receive the recommended MMR vaccine and traveled to Chihuahua, Mexico, where there is an ongoing outbreak.
Measles is highly contagious but preventable through vaccination. Health officials emphasize that getting vaccinated is crucial to protect individuals and communities. A possible exposure location has been identified, and those who may have been exposed are advised to seek medical attention.
Colorado’s measles cases this year include five hospitalized patients, with no deaths reported. The state has seen a significant increase in cases, with 17 reported so far this year – more than the entire decade prior. Experts stress that vaccination is safe and effective in preventing the spread of the virus.
With 91.5% of Colorado’s children ages 1-18 having received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, health officials are urging parents to ensure their children stay up-to-date on vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that more than 95% of a community be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.
