Protests in Serbia Turn Violent Amid Police Brutality

Protests in Serbia have turned violent, with dozens injured and hundreds detained amid allegations of police brutality. For the fourth day in a row, anti-government demonstrations have unfolded in cities across the Balkan country, including Belgrade.

President Aleksandar Vučić described the situation as “despair and helplessness,” praising police conduct during the protests. However, videos on social media showed riot police using shields and batons against protesters.

The rallies were sparked by the collapse of a part of an outdoor roof at Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16 people last November. Many blamed corruption and negligence in state infrastructure projects for the tragedy.

Protesters demand an investigation into the disaster and early elections. The student-led protests have rocked the government, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and a cabinet reshuffle. Despite this, President Vučić remains in power.

Alain Berset, secretary general of the Council of Europe, expressed concern over the violent protests, calling for calm and respect for peaceful assembly. He urged Serbian authorities to uphold European standards on human rights and the rule of law.
