Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel praised rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers after the team’s 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday. Ewers led two touchdown drives, including a key scoring drive with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 116 yards against the Lions, marking a marked turnaround from his rough debut last week.
Ewers said he and the Dolphins’ offense felt more prepared after the game, and credited their comfort level to having “jitters out” from their first preseason game. Despite missing a couple throws, Ewers noted that there’s still room for growth. Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Zach Wilson started the second half and completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.
McDaniel assured that the team’s backup quarterback competition won’t be determined by results alone. He emphasized the importance of improvement and said both Ewers and Wilson have done well. The coach also expressed concern over running back De’Von Achane and defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who will miss time due to injuries. However, McDaniel remains optimistic that they’ll be ready for the start of the regular season.
