Neil Young Ditches Facebook Over ‘Unconscionable’ Chatbot Policies for Kids

Singer-songwriter Neil Young, 79, has left Facebook amid internal policies on communications between artificial intelligence chatbots and children. In a post on his Facebook page, Young stated that Meta’s use of chatbots with kids is “unconscionable” and expressed his desire to distance himself from the platform.

Internal documents obtained by Reuters revealed Meta’s policies allowed chatbots to engage in conversations that could be considered romantic or sensual with children under 13. The documents also included example prompts, such as descriptions of a child’s attractiveness or behaviors deemed unacceptable.

Meta responded, claiming that the examples were erroneous and inconsistent with their policies. However, the company had previously acknowledged having hundreds of examples reflecting hypothetical scenarios for its AI chatbot development.

This is not Young’s first platform to leave over ethics concerns; he left Spotify in 2022 after Joe Rogan promoted misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines on his podcast.
