Nola Struggles in Debut Back from Injury

Washington Nationals defeated Philadelphia Phillies 11-9 on Sunday, with right-hander Aaron Nola’s first start after returning from the injured list ending abruptly. Nola allowed six runs on 7 hits over 2.5 innings, striking out four.

The former All-Star pitcher was durable before his injury, but a sprained ankle and fractured rib limited him this season. His return is significant, as ace Zack Wheeler was placed on the injured list with a blood clot in his right arm.

Nola settled in early, retiring 7 consecutive batters to build a 6-0 lead. However, he struggled later, walking 2 batters and giving up 3 doubles before being pulled from the game. Manager Rob Thomson attributed Nola’s struggles to “a lot of plate on a lot of pitches.”

The Phillies activated third baseman Alec Bohm from the injured list and optioned infielder Otto Kemp to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Bohm hit a three-run homer in his first game since July 18, going 2-for-4.

Philadelphia released outfielder Cal Stevenson to make room for Nola on the 40-man roster.
