Apple has introduced a new feature to its popular Voice Memos app, allowing iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max users to layer vocal tracks on top of existing instrumental recordings. This update, powered by iOS 18.2, enables users to record vocals without the need for headphones, using the iPhone’s studio-quality microphones.
The feature, known as Layered Recordings, uses advanced processing and machine learning to isolate vocal recordings. Users can apply additional mixing and production in professional apps like Logic Pro. The update also allows artists to import instrumental music mixes into Voice Memos, making it easy to record a vocal layer on top.
A trio of GRAMMY Award winners, including Michael BublĂ©, Carly Pearce, and Greg Wells, recently showcased the new feature with their track “Maybe This Christmas”. The singers praised the app’s ability to empower musicians and allow for creative freedom.
The Layered Recordings capability is available now on iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max running iOS 18.2. Users can stream the latest update in Spatial Audio on Apple Music.
