New ‘Brushing’ Scam Warns Smartphone Users of QR Code Theft

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about a new type of “brushing” scam targeting smartphone users. The scammers send unsolicited packages with QR codes that prompt victims to provide personal and financial information or download malicious software.

The FBI warns that once the QR code is scanned, the victim’s phone may be siphoning credit card numbers and credentials for bank accounts, securities trading accounts, and crypto accounts. To avoid falling victim to this scam:

* Be wary of unsolicited packages with no return address or sender information.
* Don’t scan QR codes from unknown origins.
* Take precautions before authorizing phone permissions and access to websites and applications.
* Request a credit report from a national credit reporting agency if you suspect fraudulent activity.

If you believe you’ve been targeted, report the incident to the FBI via its IC3 portal, including details of contact methods used.
