NASA has called on the public to submit photos and videos of rare atmospheric electrical phenomena. On July 3, astronaut Nicole Ayers captured an extraordinary event while aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Initially thought to be a sprite, further analysis revealed that what she observed was a gigantic jet.
A gigantic jet occurs above thunderstorms, releasing powerful electrical charges into the upper atmosphere. These events are relatively rare and can produce red emissions similar to sprites. In contrast, sprites form independently, higher in the atmosphere. Scientists hope to better understand these phenomena by studying images of TLEs (Terrestrial Lightning Electromagnetic Events), which include gigantic jets, sprites, blue jets, halos, and ELVEs.
NASA is now seeking public submissions if you’ve captured a similar event. Share your photos with Spritacular, where scientists can review and study them to gain more insights into these extraordinary atmospheric events.
