The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced a deal to buy power from an upcoming advanced nuclear plant to fuel Google’s data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. The agreement will deliver up to 50 megawatts of energy to the TVA’s grid, supporting the growth of digital economy and bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system.
The TVA is the first US utility to sign a power purchase agreement for electricity from a next-generation nuclear reactor, set to begin operations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 2030. The Hermes 2 reactor uses fluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology and will provide clean energy credits to Google.
This collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies, while supporting Google’s growing demand for electricity. The new nuclear plant is part of a larger deal between Kairos Power and Google, which plans to bring 500 megawatts of new nuclear power production online.
