US Utility Enters Advanced Nuclear Market with 50MW Plant Deal

US utility company and data center operator announces partnership with Kairos Power and Tennessee Valley Authority to deploy its first GEN IV nuclear reactor, the Hermes 2 Plant, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The deal marks a significant milestone for advanced nuclear energy in the US.

Under the agreement, TVA will purchase electricity from the plant when it begins operations in 2030, generating 50 megawatts of nuclear power to support data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee and Jackson County, Alabama. Additionally, TVA will procure clean energy attributes from the plant to power its facilities with locally sourced energy.

The project aims to boost economic growth in Oak Ridge, a site renowned for its nuclear history, by establishing a new innovation hub. Partnerships have been formed with local universities, including the University of Tennessee, to develop programs that cultivate workforce talent for high-paying jobs in the nuclear industry.

This collaboration marks a decade of growing clean energy technologies in the region and highlights the company’s commitment to advancing advanced energy solutions.
