California is expanding its network of electric charging and hydrogen refueling stations as part of a $1.4 billion investment plan approved by the California Energy Commission (CEC). The plan aims to accelerate progress on the state’s zero-emission transportation goals, with at least 50% of funding targeting priority populations.
The CEC’s Clean Transportation Program will allocate the funds over the next four years, resulting in nearly 17,000 new light-duty chargers and over 152,000 public and shared private chargers installed statewide. This brings the total number of chargers to an estimated 250,000 by the end of the year.
The plan also includes incentives for businesses, non-profit organizations, tribes, and public agencies, with a focus on clean air benefits in low-income and disadvantaged communities. The funds will become available over the next four years and distributed through competitive grants.
This investment is part of California’s $48 billion Climate Commitment, which includes more than $10 billion for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and ZEV infrastructure. The state has also received billions from the Biden-Harris Administration for clean transportation.
California’s commitment to funding zero-emission refueling infrastructure is a key aspect of its climate change policies. The CEC’s Lead Commissioner for Transportation, Patty Monahan, stated that “ZEVs are here to stay in the Golden State,” highlighting the state’s continued leadership in promoting clean energy solutions.
The investment plan highlights California’s progress in advancing ZEV infrastructure, with:
* 63% of funding allocated to disadvantaged or low-income communities
* 34,700 EV chargers installed or planned
* 96 public hydrogen fueling stations opened, with 44 operational today
* $100 million awarded for truck and bus charging and refueling projects
* $500 million dedicated to ZEV school buses
* 40 ZEV manufacturing projects supported
* Workforce training provided for over 32,000 trainees and trainers
This investment is part of California’s efforts to promote clean energy solutions and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The state’s commitment to funding zero-emission refueling infrastructure continues to drive innovation and progress in the clean transportation sector.
