A fireball blazing overhead was witnessed by multiple people across Indiana early Tuesday morning, December 10. The meteor, referred to as a bolide, streaked across the sky at approximately 4:05 a.m. ET, traveling south by southeast just west of Indianapolis.
The event was captured on camera by several residents, including Andrew B. and Michael Denney, who posted videos online. The videos show a bright, fast-moving streak of light in the sky before it incinerates in the atmosphere, producing a sonic boom-like sound.
Cloudy skies made viewing the fireball difficult, but 47 reports were submitted to the American Meteor Society (AMS) website, which tracks meteor activity across North America. Witnesses described the event as one of the brightest they had ever seen, with some comparing it to daylight.
Fireballs like this one are rare events, and their appearance is caused by meteors or debris burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. While such events occur regularly, witnessing a fireball firsthand is an extraordinary experience.
