Northern Lights Visible Across 15 US States Tonight

A fast-moving stream of solar wind from the sun’s magnetic field may cause geomagnetic storm conditions and trigger visible auroras across 15 US states tonight. According to NOAA, a coronal hole in the sun is ejecting the solar wind, which could buffet Earth’s magnetic field and lead to minor geomagnetic storm conditions.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a chance of minor geomagnetic storm conditions tonight, with the Kp index reaching 5. This indicates an opportunity for northern lights sightings between 11 pm and 5 am EDT. The U.K. Met Office notes that minor geomagnetic enhancement is expected on Monday, with a chance of G1-level storming continuing into Tuesday and Wednesday.

The following states are expected to see the northern lights tonight: Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, South Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, Washington, New York, Wyoming, and Iowa. To increase chances of seeing the auroras, head to a dark location with a clear horizon, look up around midnight to 2 am local time, and be patient.
