OpenAI Launches Sora Video Tool, But With Caveats

OpenAI has launched its highly anticipated Sora video tool to the public, but with some limitations. The tool generates short, high-fidelity videos from written text prompts, allowing users to remix and blend their own visual assets. However, due to strong demand, OpenAI has temporarily disabled account creation, citing heavy traffic.

Sora produces videos up to 1080p resolution and up to 20 seconds long, with users able to generate content in various aspect ratios. The tool is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, but not in the UK, Switzerland, or European Economic Area due to EU regulations.

The rollout comes as OpenAI faces criticism from artists who were granted early access to Sora, citing exploitation of unpaid labor for “art wash” purposes. The company has responded, stating that hundreds of artists contributed to the tool’s development on a voluntary basis.

Users can generate up to 50 videos per month with a ChatGPT Plus account and 10 times more with a Pro plan. OpenAI plans to introduce tailored pricing early next year, while working on norms and safeguards to ensure responsible use of the technology.
