Google has made a significant update to its Google Messages platform, allowing users to delete sent text messages. This feature is now available for almost all Android devices.
The new feature works by deleting the message immediately for both parties involved, providing a more convenient and modern alternative to the existing option of editing a message within 15 minutes after it’s been sent.
To access this feature, users can long press on the message until they see options at the top. They will then find a trash can icon next to the edit button. Tapping on this icon allows users to delete for everyone or just for themselves.
While the feature is now available, there are some limitations. Users who send messages via RCS messaging must use Google Messages to be able to delete their sent messages. Additionally, older versions of the app may not support this feature, and in these cases, the message may still appear on the recipient’s phone.
Despite these limitations, this new update is a significant improvement for Android users. It provides an undo option for accidental sends or regrettable messages, allowing users to quickly correct mistakes without having to delete the entire conversation. This feature is particularly welcome given that iMessage and WhatsApp have had similar capabilities for years now.
