China has successfully integrated an artificial intelligence (AI) model, Wukong AI, into its space station, Tiangong, to assist taikonauts with preparations for spacewalks. The model, developed by iFlytek, is based on a “homegrown open-source AI model” and features a knowledge base centered on aerospace flight standards.
Taikonauts used the AI model to prepare for their spacewalk, including generating a work schedule before their extravehicular activity. The AI system provided relevant links and guidance, demonstrating its capabilities in assisting with critical and complex challenges.
The deployment of Wukong AI marks China’s efforts to lead the world in space exploration. However, it may not be needed for much longer as two new spacesuits were shipped to Tiangong on the same mission, designed to have a longer lifespan, improved safety, and reliability.
This is not the first AI model deployed in space; HPE and Booz Allen previously launched an LLM on the International Space Station. The use of AI in space exploration continues to advance, with China’s deployment of Wukong AI showcasing its potential for supporting human spaceflight missions.
