Spike Lee’s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, is a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1960s masterpiece High and Low. The movie follows David King, a music producer played by Denzel Washington, as he tries to rescue his son from kidnappers, only to discover that his chauffeur’s son was taken instead.
Lee’s version retains the original story’s structure and hook, but also incorporates modern twists and satire. The film takes place in contemporary Brooklyn, with David King living in a luxury high-rise overlooking the city. This location is a nod to Lee’s 1986 debut feature, She’s Gotta Have It, where his protagonist was an artist living on the waterfront.
The remake features a catchy soundtrack, including “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'” from Oklahoma!, which sets a triumphant tone for the film. With its blend of satire and nostalgia, Highest 2 Lowest is a worthy attempt at remaking a classic.
