New Words Added to Cambridge Dictionary

Internet culture has taken over the English language, with new additions to the Cambridge Dictionary this year including skibidi, delulu, tradwife, and broligarchy.

These words have been added as a result of social media’s influence on language. Skibidi, for example, refers to a viral YouTube series where a man’s singing head pops out of a toilet, while delulu means delusional. Tradwife is a term used to describe a traditional wife who prioritizes domestic duties and posting on social media.

Another new addition is broligarchy, referring to rich and powerful tech bros with political influence. Linguist Adam Aleksic notes that algorithms tend to compound natural language change by amplifying trends and perpetuating them.

Aleksic says understanding the origins of words can help track cultural changes. By analyzing where words come from, one can also see how culture is being influenced as a whole. With more than 6,000 new words added this year, it’s clear that internet culture is shaping the English language at an unprecedented rate.
