A wave of fake Labubu dolls has flooded the UK market, posing a serious choking hazard risk to young children. The popular plushie, created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and sold by Chinese toymaker Pop Mart, has become increasingly difficult to find due to its massive popularity.
Counterfeit versions have been deemed unsafe by Britain’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), with many containing small, detachable parts that can pose a serious choking risk. The CTSI has reported seizing thousands of dangerous counterfeits across the country, often as a result of complaints from parents.
To identify genuine Labubu dolls, consumers can look for markers such as a holographic Pop Mart sticker, a scannable QR code linking to the company’s website, and a UV stamp on one of the feet. Genuine dolls have nine teeth, while fakes may vary. Overly vibrant colors and poor stitching are also indicative of an imposter.
The CTSI has warned that fake products can bypass safety checks and compliance requirements, putting children at risk. The Institute is urging everyone involved in the supply chain to play a role in ensuring safe toys never reach children’s hands.
Pop Mart, the manufacturer of genuine Labubu dolls, was contacted for comment but did not respond.
