SoftBank Invests $2 Billion in Intel Amid Layoffs and US Government Involvement

SoftBank is injecting $2 billion into struggling chipmaker Intel as the company cuts spending and lays off thousands of workers. According to SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, the investment aligns with his firm’s long-term vision for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply in the United States.

The move comes amidst reports that the US government is considering a 10% stake in Intel. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that this would be part of a larger initiative to “stabilize the company” and ensure chip production in the country.

SoftBank’s investment makes it the sixth-largest shareholder of Intel, following its previous $100 billion commitment to spending in the US during President Trump’s term. The Japanese firm has also partnered with OpenAI on Project Stargate, a massive $500 billion initiative to build data centers across the United States.
