Mosquito-borne infections are on the rise in Europe this summer, with hundreds of cases reported so far in various countries across the continent.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), nearly 470 cases of West Nile virus, chikungunya, and dengue have been confirmed this year. These viral diseases typically spread through mosquito bites.
Climate change has contributed to increased travel and warmer temperatures, making it easier for mosquitoes to thrive in Europe. The ECDC reports that eight European countries have reported West Nile virus infections: Italy (274 cases), Greece (35), Serbia (9), Romania (6), France (4), Hungary (2), Spain (1), and Bulgaria (1).
The most severe cases of West Nile virus have been among men aged 65 and older, with most people hospitalized. In Italy, at least 10 deaths were attributed to the disease in 2025.
Chikungunya is also on the rise, primarily reported in France and Italy, where there have been outbreaks in recent weeks. The ECDC reports that warmer weather during summer months facilitates mosquito transmission of the virus.
While chikungunya can cause debilitating symptoms, severe cases are rare. Dengue infections, another mosquito-borne disease, have seen a few confirmed cases in France, Italy, and Portugal.
Globally, dengue affects 100 million to 400 million people annually, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). While most infected individuals experience mild or no symptoms, extreme cases can be fatal. Preventing mosquito bites is key to avoiding these illnesses.
Key countries with reported cases include:
* West Nile virus: Italy, Greece, Serbia, Romania, France, Hungary, Spain, and Bulgaria
* Chikungunya: France (111 cases) and Italy (7)
* Dengue: France (11), Italy (4), Portugal (2)
