A mysterious drone crashed into a cornfield in eastern Poland early Wednesday morning, causing an explosion that shattered windows and shook houses in the nearby village. The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command reported no airspace violations from Ukraine or Belarus overnight.
Local authorities initially thought the explosion might be caused by a part of an old engine with a propeller, but Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz later confirmed it was likely a drone. An investigation is underway to determine whether it was a military or smuggling drone.
Residents reported hearing a loud bang and feeling their homes shake as the object exploded. Lublin District Prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz said multiple investigators are examining the crash site, with assistance from the army. The incident raises concerns about the proximity of Ukraine’s conflict to Poland’s airspace.
This is not the first time unidentified crashed objects have been found in Poland; in 2023, a Russian missile passed through Polish airspace near the Ukrainian border during a barrage. In 2022, a Ukrainian air defense missile fell on a Polish village, killing two people.
