DC Restaurant Reservations Plunge Amid Police Takeover Fears

The D.C. police takeover has sent shockwaves through the city’s restaurants, with reservations plummeting by as much as 31 percent year over year for a single day. Business owners are worried that the surge in law enforcement could impact revenue during a crucial period of summer. Summer Restaurant Week, which started Monday, has seen some establishments report low bookings despite efforts to promote the event.

Operators say the continued presence of federal troops and agents is scaring off customers, particularly those from Latin American countries who feel vulnerable due to checkpoints and traffic stops. Many are hesitant to expose themselves or their businesses to these conditions.

Council member Charles Allen has spoken to nearly a dozen restaurant owners in his district, hearing similar concerns about reduced foot traffic, canceled reservations, and employees refusing to show up for work. Restaurant owner Med Lahlou says the police presence is “devastating” to businesses, including the service industry.

Despite efforts by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington to promote the event, some establishments are struggling to stay afloat. Shaw Townsend, president of RAMW, acknowledges that some restaurants may not survive without additional support. The group will roll up their sleeves and pitch in, but Townsend is concerned about the long-term impact of the federal takeover on D.C.’s dining scene.

The White House disputes local statistics, claiming that crime is declining in the city. However, restaurant owners and council members disagree, citing a sense of unease and fear among customers. The situation has left many wondering if Summer Restaurant Week will be able to thrive this year.
