Notion Adds Offline Mode After 5-Year Request

Notion, a popular all-in-one productivity app, has finally added offline mode after years of user demand. The feature was initially met with skepticism due to the app’s cloud-first approach that prioritizes collaboration over local data storage.

However, according to Notion CEO Ivan Zhao, the company’s complex backend and interconnected data structure made it challenging to implement offline mode. Unlike Apple Notes or Google Docs, Notion does not store user data locally or in a simple “page” structure.

The development of offline mode required significant testing and migration efforts involving all engineers at Notion. The result is an app that now allows users to work offline while retaining 50 rows per database by default. Future updates will aim to increase this limit.

When offline, your content will seamlessly merge into the online version with conflicts highlighted and resolved once you reconnect to the internet. Users can learn more about leveraging offline mode in Notion here.
