A new version of the HDMI specification, named HDMI 2.2, is set to launch at CES 2025 in January. The announcement was made by the HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc., which developed the widely adopted standard for video and audio transmissions.
The new standard promises to deliver higher bandwidths and resolutions than its predecessor, HDMI 2.1b, which currently supports a gross transfer rate of 48 Gbps. HDMI 2.2 is expected to support even higher resolutions, such as 8K at 120 Hz and 10K at higher frame rates.
According to the HDMI Forum, the new standard will introduce next-generation technology capable of supporting uncompressed high-resolution content without compression via Display Stream Compression (DSC). This could potentially eliminate the need for DSC in future devices.
The launch of HDMI 2.2 coincides with CES press events scheduled by major GPU manufacturers Nvidia and AMD, which may suggest compatibility between the new standard and their upcoming GPUs. If confirmed, this would align the new HDMI standard with the latest DisplayPort 2.1 technologies, offering consumers expanded options for ultra-high-definition media and gaming experiences.
The exact specifications of HDMI 2.2 are still being developed, but it is clear that the new standard will have a significant impact on the consumer electronics landscape.
