Microsoft Fixes Reset and Recovery Issues in August 2025 Update

Microsoft has released emergency patches to address issues caused by its recent August 2025 security update. The updates, known as “out-of-band” fixes, aim to resolve problems with resetting and recovering devices.

The main issue was that the update would fail to install, causing error code 0x8007007F, affecting Windows versions including Windows 10 (21H2 and 22H2), Windows 11 (22H2 and 23H2), and Windows Server (2016, 2019, and 2022). Additionally, the update broke reset and restore functions on some Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs.

The emergency updates are now available for download via Windows Update. However, users will need to manually select and install the correct patch for their system. Fortunately, after installing these patches, the PC reset feature should work again.

Microsoft recommends that those who haven’t installed the August 2025 security update yet apply the out-of-band update instead, as it supersedes all previous updates for affected versions. If the issue doesn’t affect your device, there’s no need to install this patch.
