Colon cancer rates among young people are skyrocketing globally, with scientists tracing the cause to modern diets and lifestyles. A new study published in Lancet Oncology has found that 27 of 50 countries worldwide have seen a rise in colon cancer cases among those under 50. Rich countries like the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan are particularly affected.
The trend is not uniform, however, with some countries like Italy, Spain, and Latvia showing relatively stable rates. Researchers point to diet as a key factor, citing ultra-processed foods that can increase inflammation and compromise the immune system. Experts recommend a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, home-cooked meals, and regular exercise.
The study also suggests that environmental factors, such as air pollution and sedentary lifestyles, may play a role. The link between modern diets and colon cancer is clear: a change in diet can have devastating consequences.
