Israel’s military operation in Gaza City has escalated, with satellite images showing the displacement of civilians. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) began its offensive on Wednesday, citing a need to dislodge Hamas from the city. The IDF claims its actions are necessary for military necessity and follow international law.
According to recent satellite images, people sheltering in tent camps have already been displaced. A spokesperson for the IDF stated that it has begun “preliminary operations” in Gaza City, with the aim of defeating Hamas and securing the release of remaining hostages.
The IDF’s expanded operation has prompted warnings from humanitarian aid organizations and UN human rights officials. At least 87 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in Gaza City since August 8, including 25 children. The Site Management Cluster (SMC) estimates that over 16,800 civilians have been displaced between August 12 and August 20.
Satellite images show a significant increase in military presence around Gaza City, with over 30 armored vehicles detected. The IDF has denied allegations of intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure, stating its actions are based on military necessity.
The international community remains critical of the situation, with growing concerns about humanitarian aid and human rights in Gaza.
