Google has started rolling out its latest Android update, the QPR2 beta 1, to beta testers. This update includes several key features, including expanded support for dark mode and themed app icons.
The new dark theme option will “intelligently invert” the UI of apps that appear light despite the user’s selected dark theme, making them darker. This feature is intended as an accessibility tool for users with low vision or photosensitivity. It also automatically darkens app splash screens and adjusts status bar colors to match the darker theming.
Another feature allows users to forcibly apply themed icon colors to apps that don’t natively support them. This removes the hassle of manually applying a consistent aesthetic across their home page.
The update also includes new parental controls, which pin-protect on-device settings and allow parents to set screen time limits, downtime schedules, block apps, and filter out mature content from search engines.
Other improvements include enhanced security for migrating data between Android and iOS devices, support for annotating and editing PDF documents, and integration with Personal Audio Sharing for Bluetooth LE devices. The full feature list is available on the Android developers’ blog.
The QPR2 beta 1 update will automatically be available to Pixel users enrolled in the Android beta program. Non-Pixel users will have to wait for the official release later this year.
