Violent clashes between rival fans erupted at a Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leaving 10 people injured and 90 arrested.
The match was abandoned in the second half after fans from both sides began throwing objects at each other. One fan jumped from the stands to escape attackers, while home supporters attacked and stripped visiting fans of their clothes.
Police said that 90 people were detained outside the stadium for causing trouble, with some reports suggesting that one person had stab wounds. The Chilean ambassador to Argentina expressed concern over the violence, which was described as “truly reprehensible” by Independiente’s president.
Both teams condemned the violence and appealed for calm. However, players from both sides failed to prevent further clashes, leading to the match being abandoned.
This incident is not the first of its kind in South American football, with a similar clash reported earlier this year in Santiago, Chile, where two people died after fans and police clashed outside a stadium.
