Former UFC champion Sean Strickland has been suspended for six months and fined $5,000 after jumping into the cage and attacking a fighter at a Tuff-N-Uff event in Nevada in June. The punishment was handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission following an adjudication agreement.
Strickland will be eligible to have his suspension reduced to 4.5 months if he completes an anger management course approved by the commission, which would expire on October 15. However, if he fails to complete the program, his original six-month suspension will remain in effect until December 29.
The Nevada Athletic Commission chairman, Dallas Haun, praised Strickland for taking ownership of his actions and accepting his punishment. “Sean Strickland stepped forward. He made this process easy,” Haun said. “He apologized for his behavior. We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something, and then a resolution could be come to quickly and with all parties in agreement.”
In addition to Strickland’s punishment, UFC fighter Chris Curtis has been fined $2,500 after being involved in the same melee at the event. Curtis will also pay $157.04 for attorney fees related to his suspension but will face no suspension.
The incident began when Hernandez taunted Hunsinger’s coaches with a pro wrestling celebration after winning via guillotine choke submission. Strickland and Curtis stormed the cage, with Strickland landing a punch on Hernandez and Curtis becoming physically involved. However, Curtis did not hit anyone during the altercation.
Despite the commission’s decision, Strickland expressed relief and plans to complete an anger management course. “Ready to put this to bed and get back in the cage,” he wrote on Instagram.
