Google has introduced an “Auto-Themed App Icons” feature in the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1. This update addresses a long-standing issue where app icons were not properly themed on the home screen. In this beta, users can choose from three options to change icon themes: “Default”, “Minimal”, and “Create”. The “Minimal” option will flip existing apps’ icons to match the phone’s theme, while also applying a light color mask to unsupported icons.
A new “Create” button has been added, but its functionality is currently limited. However, based on previous leaks, it’s expected that this feature will bring significant customization options, including different shapes and sizes for icons. The introduction of auto-themed app icons brings much-needed personalization to home screens, addressing a criticism from previous versions of Android.
