Google is replacing its Google Assistant with Gemini for Home, a more advanced AI-powered virtual assistant designed specifically for smart home devices. Gemini will use AI models tuned for home tasks and work seamlessly with any household member, including guests.
The new AI can understand context better than Google Assistant, allowing users to ask more complex questions. Nest smart displays, speakers, thermostats, and smart lights can all interact with Gemini for Home. Users can command their smart devices with a single voice, such as dimming lights and adjusting the thermostat.
Gemini also features large language models that can process information from Google Search, allowing users to find recipes based on ingredients in their fridge or access up-to-date information. The virtual assistant can even create bespoke content like bedtime stories.
The new Gemini technology will be available on Nest devices but it’s unclear which older Google smart speakers and the Pixel Tablet will support it. This marks a significant expansion of Google’s AI capabilities, spreading its generative technology across all devices and services.
Google’s early investments in AI have positioned the company ahead of Apple, which has struggled to integrate AI into its devices. The rollout of Gemini for Home demonstrates Google’s success with AI-powered products, contributing to a 14% sales increase in the past quarter.
