Singaporean Doctor in Melbourne Faces Fresh Charges Over Alleged Colleague Filming

A Singaporean trainee doctor, Ryan Cho, has been granted bail after facing fresh charges related to the alleged filming of hundreds of colleagues in hospital showers and toilets. The 127 new charges add to the existing six counts against him, which include installing a surveillance device and producing intimate images.

Cho was detained for nearly a month in solitary confinement without access to psychiatric treatment, according to his lawyer Julian McMahon. He argued that the prison environment was extremely isolated, which could impact Cho’s mental health.

The additional charges relate to stalking, producing intimate images, and installing optical surveillance devices. Cho has been banned from visiting hospitals without police approval and must report to a local police station three times a week for psychological treatment.

The alleged offences occurred at three major hospitals in Melbourne: the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and the Austin Hospital. Police investigation found recording devices in staff bathrooms at all three hospitals, where Cho worked as a doctor and residential surgeon between 2020 and 2025.

Cho’s parents, who live in Singapore, were present during the bail hearing and signed a six-month rental agreement to ensure their son fulfils his bail conditions. The court has ordered him to surrender his passport, engage in psychological treatment, and follow a night curfew.
