Google Messages Introduces Built-In Unsubscribe Button for SMS Spam

Google Messages has introduced a game-changing feature that allows users to easily opt-out of unwanted promotional messages while still receiving essential one-time passwords and account alerts. The new built-in unsubscribe button is now available on Android devices in the US, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the UK for RCS for Business chats.

The feature works by sending a protocol-level command to the sender, triggering opt-out logic on their end. This means that even if the user changes phones or SIM cards, the request remains tied to the original infrastructure. The app sends a STOP command over the same protocol as the message came in, be it SMS short code or RCS business channel.

Upon tapping the unsubscribe button, a pop-up message appears with options to select why you’re unsubscribing, such as not signed up or too many messages. A confirmation message is then sent to the sender, along with a Subscribe again link in case you change your mind. The company even sends an automated apology and instructions for sending START if you ever want back in.

While this feature may cost businesses millions in lost revenue, it’s a welcome change that prioritizes user experience over economic interests. By respecting attention as a scarce resource, businesses can win trust with users who value their personal space. In regions where the feature works, the button feels like an example of good marketing.

However, a giant kill switch for SMS spam doesn’t exist yet due to technical complexities. Implementing content labeling and network trust hierarchies would require stricter telecom regulations and higher costs for small businesses. Nevertheless, Google Messages’ unsubscribe feature offers a more user-friendly solution to dealing with unwanted texts.
