Michigan is experiencing a summer surge in COVID-19 infections, and uncertainty surrounds who will be eligible for updated COVID-19 vaccines this fall. The state’s largest insurance companies have pledged to continue covering the vaccines for their members.
The uncertainty stems from a rift between leading medical groups and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy Jr. has changed the recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines, saying they should no longer be given to healthy children or pregnant women.
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists support COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and for every person 6 months and older to protect from serious illness.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is expected to reconvene in September or October to make recommendations on updated COVID-19 vaccines. Manufacturers are ramping up production of their COVID-19 vaccines, with hopes they’ll win approval.
Despite the uncertainty, Michigan pharmacists are adhering to the CDC’s recommendations and its “shared clinical decision-making” guidance for anyone who is healthy, under the age of 65 and wants a dose of the vaccine. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also supports COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and for pediatric patients.
As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread in the U.S., it’s essential for residents to get vaccinated and follow public health guidelines to protect themselves and others from serious illness.
