Nvidia is discussing a potential new computer chip designed for China with the Trump administration, according to CEO Jensen Huang. The company is reportedly working on a “B30A” semiconductor for artificial intelligence data centers in China, which would operate at about half the speed of Nvidia’s main B300 chips.
Huang praised the Trump administration for recently approving sales of Nvidia’s H20 chips to China after they were suspended in April, with the condition that Nvidia must pay a 15% tax on those sales. This decision was part of broader trade talks between Beijing and Washington, which have led to increased cooperation on chip design software and jet engine exports.
However, Chinese authorities have raised concerns about security risks associated with these chips, citing alleged “mature tracking and location and remote shutdown technologies.” Nvidia has denied such claims and is working to reassure Chinese authorities that the chips do not pose a backdoor security risk.
Huang stated that Nvidia’s H20 chips have been thoroughly tested and found to be secure, and he hopes that this will alleviate concerns. The B30A chip is expected to address some of the technical limitations of current Nvidia products in China.
Nvidia’s efforts to sell its chips to China are seen as part of a broader strategy to maintain cooperation between the two countries on advanced technology.
