Australian Trainee Doctor Accused of Secretly Recording Female Colleagues

A trainee doctor in Melbourne, Australia has been released on bail after being accused of secretly recording intimate videos of hundreds of female colleagues in hospital restrooms. Ryan Cho, 28, faces around 500 charges relating to 4,500 recorded videos since 2021.

Cho allegedly recorded the videos with his phone while hiding in staff restrooms at three Melbourne hospitals, including Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center, and Royal Melbourne Hospital. Police claim he recorded intimate images of at least 460 women.

The judge ruled that Cho should be released on condition that he lives with his parents, who moved to Melbourne from Singapore, and posts a $32,000 surety bond. His lawyer argued that the charges could be an inducement for Cho to flee Australia, but the judge noted he had surrendered his passport and has no connections to leave the country.

Cho initially faced six charges but additional 127 charges were added on Thursday, including intentionally recording intimate images without permission. The case will likely proceed to trial as Cho hasn’t entered a plea yet. This is not the first case of this nature in Australia; a former hospital employee was sentenced to prison and probation for secretly videotaping employees and patients at a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

The incident has raised concerns about workplace harassment and the need for improved security measures in hospitals.
